Those principles that are largely legally binding nowadays in the large majority of jurisdictions all over the world come originally from a few important codifications: the 1973 US Department of Health, Education and Welfare Fair Information Practice Principles, the 1980 OECD guidelines, the 1981 Council of Europe convention (Convention 108), the 2004 APEC Privacy framework, the 2009 Madrid Resolution and the 2016 GDPR.
