As commonly perceived, freedom of choice means an uncompelled choice between two (or more) options. If the choice is in any way influenced in either direction by anything outside of the chooser, it's not truly free. According to this line of thinking, anyone telling you what to do is impinging on your freedom.
The classic case Ministering Angels versus Moses reported in the Talmud has been public knowledge for millennia. Only recently, however, due to shifts of power and upheaval in the angelic realms, has the complete story come to light. Here is the entire dialogue as reconstructed by our reporter from some of the declassified transcripts.
"Rebbe, what is a Jew?" asked the five-year-old "chassid." "A Jew is fire," replied the six-year-old "rebbe." "So why am I not burned when I touch you?" "Fire does not burn fire."
I am stranded on an island with barely enough room to move about, with a breadfruit tree and a spring of fresh water, and nothing else except a 350-page spy-thriller. I read the mystery-thriller once. I read it again.
These were the early 70s in Vancouver - Canada's San Francisco. I gave classical guitar lessons and organized the "Anarchist Discussion Group" of the Vancouver Free University. I learned Tai Chi, Yoga, became a strict vegetarian, and attended countless "Encounter Groups." I hitch-hiked around Canada, the U.S., Israel, Europe and the U.K. I found souls travelling and dabbling on every kind of path I never had imagined. I returned with a broader mind, but still a craving, empty soul. None of what I found was for me. When you search, it doesn't matter where you look, the last thing you'll find is your own self.
